I was tagged on Facebook by my friend John to share four things about me that others may not know. I’m going to focus mine on performance-related topics — sharing some theatrical “firsts”!
1. My first onstage appearance was when I was around 4 or 5 years old (I think!), when I took tap dancing lessons. The only lyrics to the song we sung that I remember are “I’ll be down to get you in a taxi honey, better be ready by half past eight” (which is apparently from a song called “The Darktown Strutter’s Ball” by Dean Martin… I had no idea!). I suppose I was a rebel because in photos of the performance, I was the only girl wearing purple socks instead of white!

2. The first play I was in was called “The Little White Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings,” in Grade 2. I bet you’d never guess what that show was about! I played Mrs. Butterfly and got to sing a song called “Go Right Down to the Wishing Pond.” I remember being jealous that my friend Katie had more lines than me (15 lines as Mrs. Puddleduck to my 3), but I did have the better costume. 🙂
3. Growing up in Stratford, Ontario, I didn’t realize that many people consider going to the Stratford Festival to be a big deal. To me, it was just the typical annual school field trip! The first show I saw at the Stratford Festival was Carousel in 1991. I don’t remember much about that particular production, other than the amazing carousel horses onstage during the overture. I’m pretty sure that was the same year I got to present flowers at the Stratford Festival to Governor General Jeanne Sauvé!
4. My dream roles that I wish to play someday are Peter Pan, Viola (Twelfth Night), Extraordinary Girl (American Idiot) and Molly Astor (Peter and the Starcatcher). Shows I’d love to direct someday include The Wedding Singer and Taming of the Shrew. I also love Little Women (the play version, not the musical version) and The Addams Family but I’m not sure if I would prefer to act in them or direct them! If I was in Little Women I’d love to play Amy March, and if I was in Addams Family I’d love to play Wednesday Addams (although I’d have to be a WAY better singer than I currently am!).
I’m not going to “tag” anyone per se, but if you’d like to share some things about yourself that people may not necessarily know, please do so in the comments! Stick with the number four. 😉
