Hi! My name is Kerry Hishon. I’m an actress, director, stage combatant, and playwright living in London, Ontario, Canada. I love everything to do with theatre — I even got married in a theatre! I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Stage & Screen Studies from Queen’s University in 2006. I am especially passionate about youth theatre and education. I started working with youth in theatre in 2008, and I’ve been directing youth theatre productions at Original Kids Theatre Company since 2010.
I initially started this blog because I wanted to use this space as a portfolio/resume for my acting life, and to share my experiences with working with youth. I’ve since discovered that I love teaching people in a way that makes learning accessible — it shouldn’t be boring; it should be engaging and fun! I believe in hands-on learning, by “doing” and real-life experience — learning doesn’t stop when school is done. There is a lesson to be learned in every experience you have!
I’m a blogger at Theatrefolk, a resource for drama teachers, drama students, and theatre educators; co-author of The Drama Classroom Companion; a course creator at the Drama Teacher Academy; and a contributor for TheatreArtLife, a blog and network for live entertainment industry professionals. I was editor of Original Kids Theatre Company‘s Stagedoor newsletter from January 2015 to July 2018, and I’m a past contributor to the Musical Theatre Productions newsletter. I’m also a co-host on The Lovers, The Dreamers, and You podcast, as well as a contributor to the TLTDAY blog, where we discuss all things creative and inspirational. In the past, I worked for the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, and as a crew member aboard the Disney Wonder for Disney Cruise Line, where I got to make magic for guests every day and soak up the sunshine!
In my free time, I love having adventures and seeing as much of the world as I can, crafting up a storm, eating all the sushi, and trying to declutter my life. I’m obsessed with skulls, Disney, pirates and Grumpy Cat. My wonderful husband Shawn and our adorable cat Holly make my life extra-amazing!
