NYC Blogcademy Scholarship Application: Armed and Ready!

I’m sure you’ve heard that saying, “I’m a lover, not a fighter?”  Well, it wasn’t written about me, because I’m a lover AND a fighter.

Hi everyone.  My name is Kerry, and I’m a sword geek!  I love stage combat, all things theatrical (can’t you tell, seeing how dramatic this blog post already is?!), and I love blogging.  And I would LOVE to attend The Blogcademy in New York City on September 27 & 28!

For those of you who don’t know, The Blogcademy is an amazing blogging workshop, led by uber-bloggers Gala Darling, Shauna Haider, and Kat Williams.  They travel all over the globe, sharing their knowledge and killer style while whipping bloggers into shape with their motto, “No Boredom, No Blathering, No Bullshit!”

So, Kat, Gala and Shauna… I’m writing this post because I want, nay, NEED you to kick my ass into gear, Blogcademy-style!  I have been blogging for five years now and I want to take my blog to the next level.  I need to learn the knowledge and skills that only The Blogcademy can provide!  I am ready to be your Padawan and learn from the masters (well, mistresses!) of the blogging world.  I am ready to pull my bootstraps up and, armed with everything I’ll be learning from your workshop, become a blogging warrior!  (Please excuse my mixed-up genres; I’m so excited thinking about Blogcademy that I can hardly keep my claymores and my cutlasses straight!)

“But Kerry!” I hear you asking, “Why New York City?  You’re Canadian!  Didn’t you see that The Blogcademy was already in Vancouver and Calgary earlier this year?”

Yes, of course!  Why New York City?  This is why:

  1. It’s ridiculously expensive to fly anywhere in Canada.  I live in London, Ontario, and strangely enough it’s much more economical to fly to the States than it is to fly out to Western Canada.
  2. I adore New York City.  I’ve studied stage combat in NYC with the Art of Combat and chaperoned two trips to there with the Original Kids Theatre Company; it’s where I discovered the best damn Mexican restaurant I’ve ever eaten at, and it’s where my husband Shawn proposed to me in 2012!  Clearly NYC is very close to my heart!
  3. New York City is a place where anything can happen and dreams can come true.

So please make my dream come true and send me to The Blogcademy!

As a future soldier in the Blogcadette army, I have a few recommendations for weapons for the Blogcademy senseis to arm themselves with.  “Speak softly and carry a big stick” is all well and good, but why not kick ass and take names with a killer armoury at your disposal?!  (Don’t worry, I’d teach you all how to use them safely, of course!)

I would definitely deck out Kat with a badass broadsword!  Like Kat, broadswords are European in descent (broadswords are typically thought of as a Scottish weapon, but many of the earliest broadswords were English).  Broadswords are definitely a no-bullshit weapon, and I can totally picture Kat dispensing her no-nonsense advice while wielding a broadsword!  “If blogging is truly important to you (hack, slash), you’ll MAKE the time for it!” (slice, whack!)

For Shauna, I’d recommend an 18th century smallsword.  Don’t be fooled by its size; this baby will get your opponent five times before they can blink.  Smallswords are a thrusting weapon, rather than a slicing weapon — like Shauna, a smallsword gets right to the point with precision and finesse!  In my opinion, smallswords are one of the most difficult weapons to master, but I have no doubts that detail-oriented Shauna would pick it up in no time!

Finally, for Gala, I’d definitely arm her with a bowie knife.  Gala’s razor-sharp style, wit, and business acumen would perfectly suit this weapon that can slice you up, down, and any other way you’d like to go.

But not just any bowie knife…

Need I say more?!  Who says we can’t be fabulous AND deadly?

So, Headmistresses, I hope to see you soon in New York City!!
