Being a director is stressful sometimes.
You are the visionary. The leader. The boss. The one that everyone turns to when things go wrong.
People expect you to have all the answers. Sometimes you do… and sometimes you don’t.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably have more than one project going on at the same time, and you’re trying to juggle all your commitments at once.
You will never have two days exactly alike working in theatre.
Some days are incredibly rewarding. An actor nails their scene. A dancer performs an incredible trick. A singer hits a note that will make angels cry. The costume team pulls the perfect outfit.
Some days are incredibly frustrating. Actors are late or absent. People talk throughout rehearsal. Scripts are forgotten. Lines are forgotten. Cell phones go off. Interruptions happen without cease.
You may want to pull out your hair.
Or burst into tears.
Or run away.
Or just say “to hell with it all” and quit.
But in those moments… just remember something.
It’s only theatre.
